Great flyer based on the classic Naga Champa incense, for a night by a fantastic label. I’d go if I was in London.

Watch | The Light Bulb Conspiracy

Posted on

The Light Bulb Conspiracy investigates the history of Planned Obsolescence — the deliberate shortening of product life span to guarantee consumer demand — by charting its beginnings in the 1920s with a cartel set up expressly to limit the life span of light bulbs, right up to present-day products involving cutting edge electronics such as the iPod. The film travels to France, Germany, Spain and the US to find witnesses of a business practice which has become the basis of the modern economy, and brings back graphic pictures from Ghana where discarded electronics are piling up in huge cemeteries for electronic waste, causing intense environmental destruction and health problems.

Watch | Milton Glaser on Creativity, Technology and Life

Posted on

Milton Glaser is a New York Designer who co-founded the New York Magazine and is widely considered to be one of the greatest graphic designers alive. You might not know his name but you are extremely familiar with his work, he created this logo.

He has many wise words to say, well worth the watch. I particularly like what he has to say about technology;

The computer is dangerous because it shapes your capacity to understand what’s possible. The computer is like an apparently submissive servant that turns out to be a subversive that ultimately gains control of your mind. The computer is such a powerful instrument that it defines, after a while, what is possible for you. And what is possible is within the computer’s capacity. And while it seems in the beginning like this incredibly gifted and talented servant actually has a very limited intelligence — the brain is so much vaster than the computer. But, the computer is very insistent about what it’s good at, and before you know it — it’s like being with somebody who has bad habits, you sort of fall into the bad habits — and it begins to dominate the way you think about what is possible. … [Counter this] by doing things that are uncomfortable for it to do.

Another Brainpickings discovery.

Interesting flyer

I’m going to start posting flyers I see and appreciate because there are quite a few well designed and artistic flyers produced these days.
